linger long once passion's edge
has burned the kindling paper black and brown;
and reflected, for a season, to stammer halt and hedge:
smoke billows, ashes blow around
and inspect the earth before they kiss the ground.

I can't believe the coals will burn,

the grey remains that twist and turn
